How to Maintain a Digital Piano: 7 Things I Check Yearly

I’m going to tell you something that might sound strange coming from someone who makes a living reviewing these things: I don’t dust my piano. I mean, I do, occasionally, when the students start sneezing. But the yearly maintenance routine I run on my instruments isn't about keeping the polish shiny. It’s about catching the slow, quiet failures that turn a $500 keyboard into a frustrating piece of plastic before you even realize it’s happening.

I’ve owned twelve digital pianos in my career. I’ve watched a $200 Casio die a slow, sticky-key death in a college dorm. I’ve sent back a $6,000 slab because the action felt like a typewriter on day two. And I’ve had my Yamaha P-45 for four years now, the action gone mushy and the black keys clicking like a Geiger counter, and I still recommend it to almost everyone. That contradiction is the whole point. Digital pianos are low maintenance until they're not. The question isn't if they'll degrade, it's whether you catch it before it ruins your practice.

Every September, I do the same checkup on my studio boards. It takes about an hour per instrument, and it has saved me from teaching on a broken keyboard more times than I can count. Here’s what I check, in the order I check it.

First, the action. This is the heart of the instrument, and it's the thing that fails first. I play the same Bach Prelude in C, slowly, focusing on each key returning. I'm not listening for the sound. I'm feeling for it. On my P-45, the action has softened. It's mushier than it was in year one. The crispness is gone, and there's a faint clicking on the black keys when I press them. That's mechanical, not electronic. It's key-on-key friction, and it's the first sign of wear.

If you want to test your own action, play a fast trill on a single note. Then do it on a key in the bass register. If the treble key returns faster than the bass key, you have uneven wear. You can't fix this. You can only slow it down. Which brings me to the thing nobody wants to hear: you should be lubricating the key pivot points. Not with WD-40, which is a solvent and will strip the factory grease. I use a tiny dab of synthetic grease, the kind you'd put on a bicycle derailleur, applied to the pivot point with a toothpick. I do this to my P-45 every twelve months. It doesn't restore the old feel, but it stops the clicking from getting worse. If you're using a keyboard that's less than $300, don't bother. The action isn't worth saving. Save your money for a better board.

Second, I check the key weights. I have a small digital scale, the kind you'd use for kitchen portions. I measure the downweight on a white key in the middle of the keyboard. It should be around 50 grams on a decent weighted action. On my P-45, it was 52 grams when new. Last month, it was 48. That's a 4-gram loss, which is within the margin of error, but it tells me the felt is compressing. You have to plug it in, hold a chord, and press the pedal. If the sound cuts out, even for a split second, the pedal is done. Fourth, the speaker cones. This is the one that surprises people. The built-in speakers on most keyboards in the $500 range are pretty good, but they degrade. The foam surrounds on the speaker cones dry out and crack, usually around year four or five. You'll hear a buzz or a rattle at certain frequencies. Most people think it's the sound engine. It's not. It's the speaker. To test this, I play a sine wave sweep from a free app on my phone, through the keyboard's aux input. If there's a buzz at, say, 200 Hz, I know the speaker cone is compromised. You can't fix this. You can either live with it, or you can use headphones and bypass the speakers entirely. I have a $400 keyboard in my garage that sounds like a kazoo through its own speakers, but through a good pair of headphones, it's fine. That's a compromise I can live with, but I'd rather you know about it before you buy.

Fifth, the power supply. This is the most boring item on the list, and the one I get the most emails about. A loose power jack will cause random shutdowns, and it will drive you insane. I check the barrel connector on every keyboard I own. If it wiggles, the solder joint inside is cracked. This is a $10 fix if you can solder, or a $50 fix if you take it to a shop. But it's a fix you need. I've seen too many people buy a brand new keyboard because they thought the board was dying, when it was just a loose jack. Check the jack before you check the trash.

Sixth, the firmware and the sound engine. This is my contrarian take: the built-in sounds on most keyboards are fine, but they're not the point. I use my P-45 as a MIDI controller for Pianoteq, which is a VST that models the physics of a piano rather than playing back samples. The difference is staggering. A free VST will blow the built-in sounds out of the water, and it costs nothing. So when I do my yearly checkup, I don't spend a lot of time on the internal sounds. I check that the MIDI output is clean, that the USB connection doesn't drop, and that the velocity curve is still sending the right values. If you're not using a VST, you're leaving 80% of your keyboard's potential on the table. The action is what you're paying for. The sounds are replaceable.

Seventh, and this is the one that gets me the most hate mail, I check the cabinet. Not for dust. For screws. I take a screwdriver and tighten every screw I can find. I've had two keyboards in my life where the action actually shifted inside the case because the mounting screws backed out. That's a nightmare. The keybed starts rocking, and you feel like you're playing on a boat. The fix is a two-minute screwdriver job, but you have to do it before the screws strip. If you have a keyboard with a wooden stand, check those bolts too. I've seen more than one $1,000 cabinet setup wobble because nobody tightened the bolts after moving.

Now, the criticism. I'm going to call out the RockJam 61-key kit, which I recommend for kids, because it has a real problem. The included headphones are garbage. They arrived broken in half in my student's box. I've seen this in three separate units. The keyboard itself is fine for a 10-year-old, but the accessories are a trap. Buy a separate pair of headphones, and don't expect the sustain pedal to last more than a year. It won't. That's not a reason to avoid the kit, but it's a reason to know what you're buying.

And the contrarian take: you don't need to buy a new keyboard every five years. I know, the marketing says you do. The new models have better sounds, better bluetooth, better everything. But the action on my four-year-old P-45, even with the clicking and the mushiness, is still better than a brand new keyboard at the same price. The degradation curve is slow, and it's flat. You get 80% of the performance in year one, and 70% in year five. That's a good deal. The keyboards that fall apart are the ones under $200, and those aren't worth fixing. My rule is simple: if the keyboard cost more than $400, maintain it. If it cost less, replace it.

One more thing. The dust. I know I said I don't dust, but I do use a can of compressed air on the keybed once a year. Crumbs, cat hair, and dead skin get under the keys, and they will cause sticking. I've had to disassemble a keybed to fish out a piece of a student's granola bar. That's a real thing. It took me two hours. A can of air is $8. You do the math.

I also keep a notebook. I know, I'm a nerd. But I write down the downweight measurements, the date I lubricated the pivots, and any odd noises. When a student tells me a key feels weird, I can check my notes and know if it's a new problem or an old one. I've been doing this for 25 years, and I can tell you: the keyboards that last are the ones that get this hour a year. The ones that die are the ones that get ignored until they're unplayable.

So here's my bottom line. Spend an hour a year with a screwdriver, a can of air, and a toothpick. Catch the problems before your students do.
